In 2021, the Minnesota Vikings hired quarterback Kirk Cousin as one of the best users of play-action crime – but did not use Play-Play calls often.
The 2021 campaign was full of bizarre transgressions – such as an unforgivable amount of points allowed by the defense at the end of the 2nd and 4th quarters – so less use of play-action play-calls in crime just flew under the radar. Minnesota was a medium football team, so no one cared.
Now, though, the Vikings are poised to overcome moderation – which is the goal anyway – since a new offense-first head coach was hired in February. He is the offensive coordinator of Kevin O’Connell, the 2021 Super Bowl-winning Los Angeles Rams.
And if he wants to maximize Cousins’ best features, O’Connell should apply play-action play-calls like the Golden State Warriors shooting thriller.
Here are some statistics.
Translation: The Vikings told the cousins to go back and pass (not in the shotgun) an Arab without a play-fake more than anyone else.
From 2019, these Number of cousins By playing:
- 364 attempts
- 69.2% Comp Pct
- 3,628 yards
- 33 TD passed
- 8 INT
- 122.4 Passer rating
During Mike Zimmer’s final campaign, the Vikings asked Cousins to throw in only 20% of the time with Play Action:
If cousins are at the top of their power using PlayStation, why rank below the NFL for strategy? Did the 1980s Oakland Athletics prefer a less stealth base effort for Ricky Henderson? Probably not. It is foolish not to play with the power of a human being.
Good part? Well, the fix is easy. Dial-up more play-action in 2022. Rest in proven honor. This is an advantage of appointing an offensive minded captain. This guy is crazy with the game; Maybe we should call it action drama – Can be a simple remedy.
This is not to say that cousins will be asked to do anything outside of their comfort zone – such as talking and running 15 times per game. This is proof-of-pudding stuff.
For some reason, the aforementioned Zimmer and former OC Clint Kubiak did not call for more play in 2021. They no longer work at Egan, the Vikings decided to keep QB1 in the building, and a new coach was onboard to make the most of the offense.
More playbacks – like, coming out of their purple ears – should be on the menu in September.
