The 2022 MLB season is full of surprises.

Many MLB top talents have struggled to establish themselves in big names, such as Jarred Kelenic, Jo Adell, Bobby Witt Jr, Mitch Keller, and others.

Some pre-season favorites, such as the Toronto Blue Jays, the Atlanta Braves and the Seattle Mariners, are fighting; While the Minnesota Twins, Los Angeles Angeles and San Diego Padres are surprisingly leading their divisions.

Personally, there have been excellent pitching performances around the league, but the two pitchers are most eye-catching because of their respective backgrounds: Justin Verlander of the Houston Astros and Nestor Curtis Jr. of the New York Yankees.

Verlander has a 1.38 ERA; Cortes Mark 1.35.

“That Justin Verlander-Nestor Curtis Jr.. Sai Young fight will be a trivial matter,” MLB insider John Heyman tweeted.

Two unlikely Sai Young candidates

This was intended as a joke with some seriousness, but it may actually be the opposite: it is a more serious statement than we realize.

Verlander is a 39-year-old pitcher coming out of major surgery: it was not impossible for Sai Young to be a competitor, but it was very unlikely.

Curtis is a career journey with a 91 mph fastball and an off pitching profile.

However, with impeccable command, speed and ability to change release points and a varied arsenal, he is making it effective.

When all is said and done, these two can be very popular to win the AL Cy Young Award.

What has been left out of Heyman’s tweet is that Kevin Gaussman is leading the AL in the Wins Above Replacement (WAR), that Dylan Siege is having a full breakout season for the Chicago White Sox, and the Detroit Tigers’ Tariq Schubal is maturing right before our eyes. .

Still, Curtis and Verlander are definitely in the thick of things.
