The Minnesota Vikings had a golden opportunity with a new general manager and head coach to choose the path of rebuilding after two consecutive seasons in 2020 and 2021. They did not.
Instead, the Vikings, now led by quizzes Adopho-Mensah and Kevin O’Connell, have decided to renew the all-in stack for the seventh season in a row. It had a good roster after realizing Minnesota in 2015, then each season brought with it playoff-rival aspirations.
Until the 2022 NFL draft and a week or two later the problem was that no one else really agreed. As of May 20, Minnesota has a +4000 chance of winning the Super Bowl in 2022, with the team claiming that it has “within it to win.”
Recently, though, NFL experts have begun to look to the Vikings as a team to monitor this fall. Former Detroit Lions quarterback and current ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky has been sold out as a playoff team in Minnesota.
ESPN’s Football Power Ranking Index decided this week that the Vikings are the 13th best team in the league. NFL.com analyst and Green Bay Packers enthusiast Cynthia Freeland ranks Vikings as the top 10 unit of crime. And ESPN’s Kevin Seffert, who covers the Vikings, predicted Minnesota would reach the 2022 playoffs.
These are all nuggets of encouragement that did not exist before the draft. The world is spinning.
Therefore, there is a reasonable possibility that the hype will continue in the summer because the NFL brain realizes the Vikings actually have a strong list.
Of course, the Vikings haven’t won a Super Bowl in their 61 years of existence, so don’t pretend this article is a declaration or a prediction. But the victory in February must happen at some point, right?
A first-year head coach has not won a Super Bowl during his first voyage since 1989 – 33 years ago. That was George Seifert, and he was wrapping up a dynastic San Francisco 49ers team gift. Jim Caldwell led the Indianapolis Colts to a Super Bowl appearance in his first year but failed in the 2009 New Orleans Saints scandal.
For now, the Vikings have almost the same odds of winning as the New England Patriots.
Overall, the +4000 Super Bowl Maniline is quite steep for anyone believing in the 2022 Vikings prospects.
