Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Handley was in town on Friday to audition for the Minnesota Vikings summer roster, presumably to join a QB room with Kirk Cousins, Shawn Manion, Kellen Mond and Nate Stanley.
And, for now, Tryout will only be that – with emphasis Try.
If the company signed the handle, one person would be released from the 90-person list. Leaving Egan without a contract indicates that Handley did not cut enough to push another from the team.
Handley, 28, is suddenly a young traveler, spending so much time in his career with the Packers, the Seattle Seahawks, the Arizona Cardinals and the Indianapolis Colts. It all started in Green Bay, where Handley guided the Packers to a 3-6 record in the 2017 season. MVP passer Aaron Rogers was injured that season, and Handley was the next man.
UCLA alumni have not been caught anywhere else, at least not in a QB1 capacity. Although Handley has backed up some of the greats in the league – Russell Wilson, Kyler Murray and of course, Rogers – his ceiling during this time in his career has been QB2 or QB3.
If Handley signs with the Vikings, it will signal a little hesitation about Kellen Mond’s views on the Vikings. Last season, Mond failed to win the QB2 job in charge of former head coach Mike Zimmer, and now viewers are left to wonder if Mond simply disliked Zimmer – or if he didn’t flat out too well.
This is one of the great purple mysteries of 2022.
Mond was a 3rd-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft, and 3rd-rounders should occupy QB2 jobs relatively easily with their salt price – especially with Shawn Manion as the competition. Manion has a constructive personality in the locker room, but his output off the field is not dynamic.
Other players who tried with Handley but left without a contract include Jordan Silver (LS) of Arkansas, Hunter Topel (OL) of Minnesota State, and Goldie Gopher Connie Door (DB).
