Expert Roar: Name your main teams for the first game

The teams for the State of Origin series opener will be named after the NRL Indigenous Round this weekend where both coaches will face a few curly questions as they settle into their squads.

NSW and Queensland will announce the names of the 22-member squad for the showdown to be held at Acre Stadium on June 8 where there are forced injuries for several changes while some big names are out of form and their representatives are fighting to retain the jersey.

Brad Fitler will have to find two new centers where Tom Trobozevic and Lateral Mitchell have been ruled out due to injuries, while Billy Slater has a few selective headaches around his forward pack and outer back, as well as Kalin Poeng at fullback despite his modest form in Newcastle. . Weather.

The Maroons lost some way with their build-up to their game last year when they picked up a few blocks in club football with injuries or down form so they wouldn’t do it again. I prefer Murray Toulagi, Val Holmes, will probably be one of the centers, as a wing option given to his partner at the left end of the Cowboys.

For NSW, Stephen Crichton is a no-brainer who came for one of those spots because of his relationships with the other Panthers on the team, and I want to go with Cotoni Stags as the right center.

NSW chooses the starting lineup itself but Brad Fitler has the opportunity to introduce some new blood on the bench so why not pick some new faces like Nico Hynes, Ryan Matterson and Hudson Young who are in the best form of their careers.

Queensland also needs to make some changes – Jeremiah Nanai must make a start somewhere when Hamiso Tabuai-Fido showed he was not overwhelmed at his origins debut so he could be a strong option in a wing.

Saifiti, Angus Crichton and Jurbo are not in form but have run on board at this level for NSW and are somewhat confident they will deliver again this year – at least for Game 1.

On the other end of the spectrum of experience, Queensland teenager Kobo and Nanai have both been electrified this year, scoring for fun. I don’t know if we’ll say the Maroons are rebuilding but their best shot at creating a new dynasty lies in their young talents – and it’s not that these two war-hardened veterinarians will be spotted helping their kingdom win multiple shields.

I urge the coaches to balance the selection in good home and away form mixed with proven origin performance. I want both sides to be full of young blocs but not the way the original coaches choose – although Billy Slater is the one to do it.

I think Jack Whitton went back to the NSW center, Matt Burton on the bench to take advantage of the tiring opposition, and I was very close to Api Koroisau as the NSW hooker. On the Maroon side, I want the Cobo and Coates wings, the Mo Fotuaika heavy duty for the initial staff and the Nanai and Carrigan to be interrupted between 40.

I said a few weeks ago that Ruben Cotter and Reese Witherspoon should be on the sidelines, so I got into everything! And I put Matterson aside – he was awesome.

David doesn’t have Fifita, and I reluctantly put Panga at number one, but he would have been there if he had had a few more games under his belt after the hammer hit. I have him on the bench

Injury means there are plenty of places to occupy this year.

Wherever possible I have tried to stick with existing and successful combinations as well as some players like Tualgi and Hynes who are in exceptional form.

It’s almost impossible to mess with a blues outfit with one to seven people, perhaps the COSICFA divorce is a person whose strong position in the center could be claimed by Stephen Crichton. On the front, Payne Haas and Jack Trobozevic start the walk up, Isa Yeo not far behind. Despite injury concerns, Cam Murray has earned a place and junior Paolo will provide a normal headache for an opponent’s defense who will be extremely aware of his presence.

Reagan Campbell-Gillard deserves a bench spot in my view although the subs are probably a bit heavier and the in-form Chad Townsend should be chosen as a utility / contingency option on the bench. After another great performance for the Raiders, Hudson Young will not look out of place in the starting 13th.

Billy Slater is good at sticking to Calin Ponger at fullback and using Reese Walsh off the bench as an X-factor effect. As a result, I couldn’t find a place for Ben Hunt as a utility sub, and although it could raise a few eyebrows, the positional flexibility of Ponga and Valentine Holmes allowed the coach to select more dynamic players on his bench.

Kurt Capwell struggled defensively in the beginning and in the spirit of avoiding the definition of insanity, now is the time for the Maroons to throw some of their new weapons into the blues, with Patrick Carrigan and Jeremiah Nanai playing key roles if elected.

Stags and Crichton are clear standout centers in front of Matt Burton, Ciosifa Talakai and Campbell Graham. Given that the NSW would choose Yeo as a ball-playing lock, I can’t see why they would choose Jake Trobozevic as well. If he doesn’t touch the ball as many times as he does in Manly, he is basically an expert defender.

Cam Murray is probably injured so Angus Crichton is going for him. My outsider for the bench would be David Klemer: he will currently be the third and perfect medium rotation option among all props for the meter in every game.

There’s some crazy talk about Selwyn Kobo: The guy has played three good games. You will be sorting out the possibilities alone. Toulagir was 40. He’s my winger, especially when you keep the club combo.

Ponga hasn’t impressed at all back this year, so I’ll keep Reese Walsh there. There’s also crazy talk about Nanai, who is a good triscorer but has climbed down the meter and over the error. She’s not playing if you don’t kick her.
